iOS 27: Every Feature Apple Confirmed at WWDC 2026

The pulse

Apple delivered. After two years of delays, a $250 million class action settlement, and mounting pressure from Google and Samsung, iOS 27 arrived at WWDC 2026 with Siri AI at the centre. The rebuilt assistant, powered by Google’s Gemini models, now understands your screen, your personal context, and the world around you. macOS 27 got the name Golden Gate. Every Apple platform got performance improvements. And Tim Cook delivered what is almost certainly his final WWDC keynote before handing the CEO role to John Ternus on September 1.

Three announcements led the keynote. Siri AI, the most ambitious upgrade to Apple’s assistant since its 2011 launch. iOS 27’s performance overhaul, with Photos loading 70% faster and AirDrop transfers 80% faster. And a significant caveat: Siri AI will not be available in Europe on iOS or iPadOS at launch due to the Digital Markets Act, and will not be available in China at all due to regulatory requirements.

Core significance

Why it matters:

  • Siri AI finally delivers what was promised in 2024:  The personal context awareness, on-screen awareness, and cross-app execution Apple promised at WWDC 2024 and delayed twice have arrived. Siri AI launches as a dedicated app, understands what is on your screen, knows your calendar and emails, and can execute multi-step tasks across apps. It includes an in-house web search capability called World Knowledge Answers built directly into Spotlight and Safari. This is the Siri Apple has been building toward for three years.[Tom’s Guide — iOS 27 official features WWDC 2026]
  • iOS 27 is the broadest iPhone update Apple has ever shipped:  Apple confirmed iOS 27 will run on every device that supports iOS 26, including the iPhone 11 from 2019. That is the largest compatible device base for any iOS update in Apple’s history. The performance improvements are not limited to flagship devices. Apple modified the CPU scheduler specifically to help older devices feel faster after updating.[Engadget — everything announced WWDC 2026]
  • The EU and China carveouts are the most consequential fine print:  Siri AI will not be available on iOS 27 or iPadOS 27 in the European Union at launch due to Digital Markets Act regulatory requirements. EU users will still receive Siri AI on macOS 27, visionOS 27, and watchOS 27. China will not receive Siri AI at all due to local regulatory requirements. Together these carveouts exclude two of Apple’s most important markets from the headline feature of iOS 27.[TechRadar — WWDC 2026 live coverage]

Deep context: Tim Cook’s final keynote

Tim Cook opened WWDC 2026 with an acknowledgement that this will almost certainly be his final keynote as CEO before John Ternus takes the role on September 1. Cook has been CEO since August 2011. He introduced the original Siri at Apple’s first event after Steve Jobs’ death. Fifteen years later, he unveiled Siri AI, the rebuilt version of that same product, powered by Google’s Gemini technology, at his final developer conference.

That context matters because it frames iOS 27 as both a product milestone and a transition document. Apple is handing Ternus a platform that, for the first time since 2011, has an AI assistant that can credibly compete with Google Assistant and Samsung’s Galaxy AI features. The work is not finished. Siri AI launches as a beta in September. Several features remain in progress. The EU and China carveouts represent unresolved regulatory challenges. But the foundation is substantially more complete than it was when Cook first promised it.

As covered in our WWDC 2026 Apple Intelligence preview, the two-year delay between the original Siri AI promise and today’s delivery was accompanied by a $250 million class action settlement covering 36 million eligible iPhone buyers. iOS 27 and Siri AI are not just product releases. They are the resolution of a public credibility debt Apple has owed its customers since WWDC 2024.

The business case: what Siri AI actually changes

The new Siri AI changes the iPhone’s value proposition for professionals in three specific ways that previous iOS updates have not delivered.

First, cross-app execution means Siri can now complete workflows that previously required switching between multiple apps manually. Asking Siri to find a specific email, add the meeting details to your calendar, and draft a response all in one instruction is now possible. That is not a demo capability. It is a daily workflow change for anyone who manages communications and scheduling on an iPhone.

Second, World Knowledge Answers integrates AI search directly into Spotlight and Safari. Searching from the iPhone home screen or from Safari now returns AI-synthesised answers rather than only blue links. For users who currently open ChatGPT or Perplexity for research queries, this reduces the context switch. The research happens in the same interface as everything else.

Third, the dedicated Siri AI app with conversation history changes how Siri is used. The old Siri was a voice command interface for single requests. The new Siri app is a persistent chatbot for complex multi-turn conversations. A professional who asks a follow-up question can now do so without Siri losing the context of the previous answer. For a full guide to using these features in professional workflows see our iOS 27 AI adoption guide for business professionals.

Expert nuance: the EU DMA carveout is Apple’s biggest problem

The Digital Markets Act restriction on Siri AI in the European Union is more significant than Apple’s keynote treatment suggested. EU iPhone users upgrading to iOS 27 will receive the performance improvements, the Liquid Glass refinements, the AirDrop speed gains, and every non-AI feature. They will not receive the headline feature of the entire iOS 27 release.

The DMA restriction exists because Apple and the European Commission have not agreed on how to make Siri AI compliant with the DMA’s interoperability requirements. Apple’s position is that opening Siri AI to third-party interoperability as required by the DMA creates privacy and security risks that are incompatible with the Private Cloud Compute architecture. The Commission’s position is that Apple must comply.

The practical consequence is that approximately 450 million EU iPhone users will use an iOS 27 that is missing its defining feature. That is a competitive problem for Apple in Europe, where Android’s market share is already higher than in the US. Samsung’s Galaxy AI features, including Circle to Search and Live Translate, have no equivalent EU DMA restriction. Apple is entering the European AI assistant market with both hands tied while its primary competitor does not.

Strategic outlook

  1. September 2026 is when Siri AI is actually tested:  The developer beta available today is not the product that reaches 1 billion iPhone users. The September public release alongside iPhone 18 is the moment that determines whether iOS 27 and Siri AI change iPhone’s competitive position. Watch the upgrade rate in the first 30 days after September public release. High upgrade rates signal user confidence. Slow upgrade rates signal concern about the features or device compatibility.
  2. The EU negotiation will define 2027:  Apple and the European Commission will spend the rest of 2026 attempting to reach an agreement that allows Siri AI to launch on iOS in Europe. The outcome determines whether the EU remains a first-tier market for Apple’s AI features or becomes a permanently restricted market. A resolution before iPhone 18’s launch would allow EU users to access Siri AI at the same time as US users. No resolution means Apple ships iPhone 18 in Europe without its primary AI differentiator.
  3. John Ternus’s first product decision starts now:  Ternus becomes CEO on September 1, the same day iOS 27 and Siri AI reach the public. His first leadership test is whether Siri AI delivers in practice what it promised in the keynote demo. The history of Apple AI announcements since 2024 means the bar for public credibility is higher than normal. A Siri AI that genuinely works will validate Ternus’s inheritance. A Siri AI that disappoints will define the first chapter of his tenure.

Key question answered

What is iOS 27 and what are its new features?

iOS 27 is Apple’s annual iPhone software update, officially announced at WWDC 2026 on June 8. The headline feature is Siri AI, a rebuilt assistant powered by Google’s Gemini models with a dedicated app, personal context awareness, on-screen awareness, cross-app execution, and World Knowledge Answers in-house web search. iOS 27 also delivers Photos loading 70% faster, AirDrop transfers 80% faster, a rebuilt search foundation across Spotlight and Mail and Photos, iCloud Shared Albums with full resolution and Android and Windows support, adjustable Liquid Glass transparency, Apple Maps Flyover improvements, AirPods custom EQ, expanded parental controls, and AI photo editing tools. iOS 27 supports iPhone 11 and later. Siri AI requires iPhone 16 or iPhone 15 Pro. Developer beta is available June 8. Public beta arrives July 2026. General release is fall 2026 alongside iPhone 18. Siri AI is not available in the EU on iOS or iPadOS at launch due to the Digital Markets Act, and is not available in China.

The takeaway

iOS 27 is the update Apple’s customers have been waiting for since WWDC 2024. The Siri AI delay is over. The personal context awareness is real. The cross-app execution works. The World Knowledge Answers web search is built in. The performance improvements are the most substantial in years. Apple shipped.

The asterisks matter. Siri AI launches as a beta in September, not as a finished product. EU users get an iOS 27 without its defining feature. China gets nothing. And the $250 million settlement covering the 2024 and 2025 delays is a permanent reminder that Apple announced these features before they were ready.

For the 1 billion-plus iPhone users outside the EU and China, iOS 27 landing this September is the most significant software upgrade since Face ID changed the iPhone in 2017. Whether the September public release matches the June 8 demo is the question that defines whether iOS 27 is Apple’s comeback moment or another chapter in the Siri credibility story.
